Multi-play service provider deploys Allot's NetEnforcer devices to offer on-the-go email notification, instant messaging and video availability on Internet network

Minneapolis, MN – Aug. 8th, 2007 – Allot Communications (NASDAQ: ALLT), a leader in IP service optimization solutions based on deep packet inspection (DPI), today announced that Vodafone Iceland has been using the Allot service optimization solution to deliver a highest Quality of Experience (QoE) to both residential and corporate subscribers.

Vodafone Iceland is a multi-play service provider, offering mobile, fixed, Internet and data services. After complaints from subscribers regarding Internet performance, Vodafone’s operations team realized they needed to respond quickly to avoid any long term repercussions. They had tried assessing the phenomena using existing monitoring tools, but were unable to pin-point the source of the problem. “We were puzzled with the under-performance of our two international submarine links despite a costly investment to increase bandwidth by 50% each year," said Palmi Sigurdsson, Network Manager at Vodafone Iceland.

After consulting with RanTek A/S, which has many years of experience optimizing networks with similar challenges, Vodafone engaged their professional consulting team to perform a thorough analysis using the Allot NetEnforcer as the key tool to pin-point the source of the problem. Vodafone Iceland deployed Allot’s NetEnforcer devices on their peering links and utilizing the DPI-based real-time monitoring. They soon determined the traffic surges were caused by a relatively small number of heavy users, consuming vast quantities of bandwidth for recreational use. Reports generated by the Allot NetXplorer Reporter confirmed P2P applications were responsible for 60% of inbound traffic, and 80% of outbound traffic.

Vodafone’s operations were able to rapidly deploy policies to alleviate the congestion and guarantee the maximum QoE to all subscribers on the network at all times. “We deployed the NetEnforcer device in one morning and less than an hour later, not only could we chart that 80% of the congesting traffic was P2P, but the traffic policy we activated instantly gave our on-line gamers and business users very high Quality of Experience,” added Sigurdsson.

The Allot solution was initially selected for its ability to be rapidly deployed and for the strong network troubleshooting tools of the NetXplorer. It was also discovered that Allot’s superior ability to handle asymmetric traffic meant that the peering links could be optimized with half the number of devices of its nearest competitor. After initial deployment, Vodafone noted a dramatic fall in performance-related calls to the help desk. An additional benefit of the deployment came in the form of inputs from bandwidth-sensitive subscribers such as on-line gamers, who reported a significant increase in satisfaction with their service.

Looking to the future, Vodafone Iceland plans to use the Allot solution to implement a range of new products and services, such as quota-based SLAs and VAS (value-added services).

"Vodafone's immediate improvement of customer QoE raises customer satisfaction, and their increased network efficiency reduces the very costly strategy of increasing bandwidth by 50% a year", said Rami Hadar, CEO and president, Allot Communications. "Moreover, Vodafone's plans to increase revenues by leveraging on Allot’s Quota Management feature will provide them with intelligent billing on per user and per application basis. And our Service Gateway features will enable the introduction of new value added services that will also contribute to Vodafone’s top line growth."
