Proofpoint Protection Server Passes Critical Milestone for Government Certification

Sunnyvale, Calif. – March 12, 2008 – Proofpoint, Inc., the leading provider of unified email security and data loss prevention solutions, today announced that the Proofpoint Protection Server version 5 software is officially in evaluation for an EAL2+ certification under the Canadian Communications Security Establishment’s (CSE) Common Criteria Evaluation and Certification Scheme (CCS). Common Criteria evaluation is mandated for commercial information security products purchased by governments worldwide, including the United States government. Proofpoint’s decision to undergo Common Criteria evaluation further demonstrates the company’s commitment to delivering the highest quality solutions to government organizations worldwide.

“Proofpoint’s inclusion on the in-evaluation list assures customers that we are meeting important milestones along the way to this widely-accepted government certification,” said Sandra Vaughan, senior vice president of products and marketing for Proofpoint. “Our acceptance to this standard will enhance Proofpoint’s ability to meet the email security needs of a growing number of government customers who need to protect confidential data and defend against email-borne threats.”

Common Criteria is an internationally recognized set of guidelines (ISO 15408), which define a common infrastructure for IT security products. The standard consists of several predetermined assurance levels, each one more stringent than the last. Each level has a specific set of requirements against which the functionality of a product is evaluated by an accredited testing laboratory, assuring the security functionality of the product. The evaluation process is rigorous and can take months or years to complete. Once achieved, Common Criteria evaluations are mutually accepted by 25 countries, including the United States and Canada, regardless of what country the product was evaluated in. The standard is also followed unofficially by several countries, including those which are a part of the European Union.

Proofpoint Protection Server is under evaluation with Electronic Warfare Associates-Canada, Limited (EWA-Canada), which operates an independent third-party Common Criteria Test Lab.

“Proofpoint has successfully achieved the first step in the evaluation and certification of Proofpoint Protection Server, allowing them to join a select list of products in-evaluation that government agencies rely on when looking at security products,” said Erin Connor, Lab Director for the IT Security Test Labs at EWA-Canada. “We look forward to continued success as we progress through analysis, testing and final certification.”

In order to facilitate the prompt completion of the Common Criteria evaluation process, Proofpoint has partnered with Corsec Security, a consulting firm with more than ten years of validation experience.

“Proofpoint can be proud of achieving this important milestone for Common Criteria in such a timely manner,” said Matthew Appler, CEO of Corsec Security. “Proofpoint has been a dedicated partner in the process, a quality we value in clients as we help them navigate the complexities of government validation. Their success underscores a strong commitment to providing customers with a best-in-class security product that meets stringent government standards.”
